11 May 3D GLASSES FOR BETTER HEALTH – WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT?
Routine physical exams are about to become more interesting than ever! Imagine if you could avoid different procedures and roentgen scans and put 3D glasses on instead! Sounds impossible, right? Well, it looks like scientists are on a good way to use virtual reality for this purpose – only for recognizing mental illnesses, at the moment.
Mental health problems and neurological conditions affect more than 20% of people worldwide at some point during their lifetime. Virtual reality is slowly gaining prominence in the medical field as different applications such as diagnostics tools, testing equipment and therapeutic devices are gradually being developed.
The basic idea is that patient wears virtual reality glasses and headphones, and is projected into a virtual environment specifically designed to diagnose a category of mental disorders. These virtual environments put the patient through multiple stimuli, causing different reactions which are being monitored and registered as multiple variables. The results of these standardized tests are scientifically validated and can be potentially developed in all languages.
One of the advantages compared to classical tests is that patients can be observed in environments that are close to reality and monitor reactions immediately. This product has been sold to more than 200 institutions in over 25 countries, mostly hospitals, universities, clinics, big corporations and foundations.
